Tripura police on Friday (June 12, 2026) arrested the boyfriend of a girl who was found dead in her hostel room at the Santiniketan Medical College near Agartala amid speculations and doubts over the actual cause of death of 24-year-old Manisha Das, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has ordered a magisterial enquiry into the incident.An official communiqué said West Tripura District Magistrate would conduct the inquiry and submit a report to the State government. Police earlier claimed that they believed the girl had taken her life, but said they were waiting for a post-mortem report.Santiniketan Medical College in Tripura is an extension of the same college located at Bolpur in West Bengal. The establishment of the college in Tripura faced hurdles after allegations surfaced over the nexus of a senior BJP leader with the management of the college having reported proximity with the Trinamool Congress.The college, however, received all clearances and approvals from the government authorities and the academic session of the college entered its second year recently.The death of the young girl resurfaced the controversy, with opposition parties raising questions over the manner the probe was being conducted. They also claimed that police were trying to hush up the tragic death.Senior police officials who were overseeing the probe said the probe was going in the right direction. The police have arrested the boyfriend of the girl, Prasenjit Sarkar, who last spoke with the deceased over the phone.The police booked him for allegedly abetting the suicide of the girl.
