A TikTok cleaning influencer has shared a tip that can help break down dirt and grime while adding a natural shine to wooden floors, making it a simple and cost-effective alternative to shop-bought floor cleaners.06:12, 13 Jun 2026Wooden floors have become increasingly favoured over carpet in British homes thanks to their much easier maintenance, yet during spring and summer, they often need a deep clean to prevent deterioration. It's surprisingly common for floors to start losing their sheen at this time of year, as the season sees us opening windows more often, which can allow extra dust and pollen to enter.‌This causes debris to accumulate on the floor, creating a thin layer that leaves the surface looking truly dull and tired.‌If all the grime is allowed to gather, it can not only make a room look neglected, but over time, these tiny particles may wear away the finish, potentially causing lasting damage.‌To prevent this, cleaning influencer Danielle, who posts as @momthatlovestoclean on TikTok, has revealed her "amazing and natural" remedy for shinier floors.Content cannot be displayed without consent‌Danielle relies on four ingredients in her wooden floor cleaning formula, but there's one crucial product that's vital for "breaking down dirt and grime and adding shine" — and that's black tea.Due to its high tannin content, black tea can enhance the natural hues of the wood, giving it a revitalised appearance. Moreover, the compound can lift and cut through grime, cleaning your floors. While other teas do contain tannins, anything other than black tea isn't advisable. Tannin levels vary considerably between different teas, and alternatives to black tea either contain lesser amounts or prove inconsistent.‌To clean wooden floors using black tea, you'll require boiling water and approximately six to 12 black tea bags, depending on the shade of your floors. The darker the wood, the greater the number of tea bags you'll need.Essentially, boiling the tea draws out the tannins necessary for cleaning and polishing your floors.‌Once the tea has cooled, dip a soft cloth into it and wring it out thoroughly. Excess moisture can cause damage to hardwood floors, but provided the cloth isn't dripping wet, it should be perfectly safe to use.Wipe the floors following the grain of the wood — this helps avoid streaking — and you should notice an improvement straight away.Once you've finished cleaning your floors, it's a great opportunity to use the tea bags to tackle your kitchen windows too.Article continues belowOther natural household staples can also help maintain wood. Some homeowners dilute white vinegar in water, while others opt for olive oil, lemon juice or linseed oil — though these alternatives can leave stronger odours or a slightly greasy residue that attracts dust.
