NCC cadets deployed at the Alandur Metro Rail station.
Commuters rushing to enter without giving way to those exiting the trains is a sight that one often witnesses in Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) stations. In a bid to stop this practice and bring in transit etiquette, the CMRL will deploy National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets at some of the major stations with high footfalls. For a start, the initiative has been taken up at the Alandur Metro Rail station, where 25 cadets created awareness among passengers during peak hours in the last two days.According to CMRL officials, the cadets spoke to passengers, asking them to follow good commuting practices in such mass rapid transit networks. This was not restricted to allowing passengers to alight from the train before boarding, but included practices such as standing on the left and walking on the right while using escalators, not crossing the yellow line on the platform, using earphones while listening to music or watching videos during the travel and standing away from the doors.“We were receiving complaints about certain commuters not making way for others to deboard and some listening to music on speaker. Hence, we decided to organise this initiative. Over the next few months, in high footfall stations such as Thirumangalam, Chennai Airport, Guindy, Thousand Lights, and Chennai Central, we will extend this programme during the rush hours,” an official said.
