At a time when stories about migrant workers often focus on the challenges of living and working abroad, an Indian construction worker in Romania is being celebrated for a remarkable act of bravery. Vipan Kumar, a 47-year-old Indian national, has been awarded honorary citizenship by the Romanian city of Craiova after rescuing a five-year-old girl who fell through the ice of a frozen lake earlier this year.Rescue that captured national attentionThe incident took place in January at Nicolae Romanescu Park in Craiova. According to reports, the child had been spending time with her parents when she ran onto a frozen lake. The ice suddenly cracked beneath her, sending her into the freezing water. As panic spread among people nearby, the girl's father attempted to reach her but became trapped in the broken ice. Witnesses alerted emergency services while others looked for ways to help.Kumar, who was walking nearby with a friend, did not hesitate. “I was on a walk, with a friend of mine. I saw the little girl in the water, then I jumped immediately. The water was very cold; everything happened very quickly,” he told Digi24 television.Videos of the rescue later circulated widely on social media. Footage showed Kumar making his way across the ice before it gave way beneath him. Despite the danger, he managed to reach the child and keep her above the freezing water until rescue teams arrived.Reflecting on the moment, Kumar said: “I just tried to get her out of the water, that’s all I thought about. The little girl was very brave.”Both Kumar and the child were later taken to hospital suffering from hypothermic shock. They were reported to be in stable condition.Honour from the cityThe rescue drew praise across Romania and prompted local authorities to recognise Kumar's actions.Craiova Mayor Lia Olguța Vasilescu announced that the city would award him honorary citizenship. “For the courage and humanity he demonstrated, Craiova City Hall will award him the title of honorary citizen of the city, in the hope that his gesture will serve as an inspiration to others,” the mayor said, according to Hotnews.ro.Earlier, she had proposed the honour, saying: “I decided to propose that he gets the title of honorary citizen. Craiova Local Council will formally grant the title, which comes with certain advantages.”“We hope that his altruistic and humane gesture will inspire others,” she added. From migrant worker to local heroAccording to the mayor, Kumar came to Romania for work and is employed by a construction company in Dolj County. The honorary citizenship ceremony was attended by India's Ambassador to Romania and Moldova, Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohapatra, who said Kumar's actions reflected the values of compassion, service and humanity. Referring to the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning "The World is One Family," he said the rescue showed the importance of helping others regardless of nationality. What began as an ordinary walk on a winter day has made Kumar one of Craiova's most celebrated residents. His quick action saved a young girl's life and earned him recognition far beyond his workplace, turning a migrant worker far from home into a local hero.
