A nearly 30-metre-long road cave-in that developed on 80 Feet Road in Ganapathy on Thursday night was traced to a leak in an underground drinking water pipeline, officials said. The cave-in occurred on a stretch of the busy arterial road in Ward 20, raising concerns among motorists. Officials said water from the leaking pipeline had eroded the soil beneath the road surface, resulting in the subsidence.Following the incident, drinking water supply through the affected pipeline was temporarily stopped to prevent further damage.Corporation officials carried out temporary restoration works by levelling the caved-in section with wet mix material to facilitate the movement of vehicles. Barricades were placed at the site and traffic was regulated.Officials said excavation work would be undertaken to identify and repair the damaged portion of the pipeline. The leak is expected to be rectified within a day, after which permanent restoration of the road surface would be taken up. Published - June 12, 2026 07:00 pm IST
