Constable Moeketsi Moeketsane, 33, was sentenced after the tragic shooting of his colleague, Constable Nthabiseng Rachel Mapuru, 31, during a routine police parade in Bloemfontein.

A Free State police constable who fatally shot a fellow officer during what authorities described as careless handling of a firearm has been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said Constable Moeketsi Moeketsane, 33, was convicted of culpable homicide following the death of his colleague, Constable Nthabiseng Rachel Mapuru, 31.

According to IPID, the incident occurred on November 8, 2025, at about 5pm while officers were attending a routine parade before reporting for duty at a police station in the Free State.

"Police Officers were on a routine parade at the station reporting for duty. They were about to disperse, when Constable Moeketsane and Constable Mapuru were seen fiddling with a firearm," IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said.
