Tony Popovic has signed a one-year contract extension as Australia’s head coach, securing his position through early 2027. The deal was finalized on June 12, 2026, just one day before the Socceroos’ FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D opener against Türkiye in Vancouver.
From qualification hero to World Cup commander
Popovic took over the national team in September 2024 following Graham Arnold’s departure. Under his leadership, Australia earned direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup — the first direct entry without playoffs in 12 years.
The extension specifically aligns his tenure with the AFC Asian Cup 2027, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027.
