For Kamayagoundanpatti villagers, near Cumbum in Theni district, it was celebration time on June 12 (Friday), when Lance Naik A Meenakshi Sundaram arrived with his family members.The proud villagers garlanded the Indian soldier, presented him with shawls, distributed sweets and burst crackers as they welcomed a real Hero.Villagers, including children, women and elders walked along with Lance Naik A Meenakshi Sundaram and his family through the main thoroughfares with youngsters dancing to the drumbeats till they reached the hero’s home.BackgroundOn December 19, 2024, when Mr Meenakshi Sundaram, attached with the Regiment of Artillery 34th Rashtriya Rifles, was on duty in the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, the team encountered five terrorists. Even after he was shot at by one of the terrorists on his face, the Lance Naik, showed his bravery by retaliating with full vigour.It was a counter-terror operation in Kulgam and when the Indian Army neutralised the terrorists, it was a proud moment for the entire nation.On August 15, 2025, the Centre had announced Kirti Chakra award to Lance Naik Meenakshi Sundaram on Independence Day.At the investiture ceremony held at the Rashtrapathi Bhavan, on June 8, President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to Mr Meenakshi Sundaram in the presence of Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries.On his arrival here at home, the people, who were eagerly waiting to see him, also took selfies and greeted him.
