Qualifying for the FIFA World Cup is often considered routine for football powerhouses such as Brazil, Germany and Argentina.

For smaller nations with limited populations and resources, however, reaching football’s biggest stage remains one of the sport’s greatest achievements.

Over the years, several tiny countries have defied the odds to earn a place among the world’s elite, proving that population size is not always a barrier to success on the international stage.

As reported by Planet Football on Friday, leading the list is Curaçao, which became the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup after securing a place at the 2026 tournament. With a population of just 185,000 people, the Caribbean island surpassed Iceland’s previous record and etched its name into football history.
