MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine officials on Friday said that years of disaster drills helped prevent a larger casualty toll when one of the most powerful earthquakes in 50 years hit Mindanao and left 55 people dead with 31 others missing.

The powerful 7.8-magnitude quake that hit off Sarangani province on Monday left more than 12,600 homes damaged across rural and urban areas. The disaster injured about 1,120 people and forced over 45,000 from their homes, half of whom remain in emergency shelters.
