Madras, June 11: Concerned at the growing murder and dacoity menace on the railways, the Union Railway Minister has held discussions with the Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh recently. Following these discussions, the three Chief Ministers have assured the Railway Minister that they would take steps to ensure close co-operation in fighting the menace.The Ministry has also taken several measures to reorganise the Railway Protection Force and to invest them with powers of reporting and investigating crimes, thus relieving the Government Railway Police of their duties. This is imperative because about 40 RPF personnel have laid down their lives in the past while protecting railway property.The Inspector General of RPF, Mr. R.D. Singh, to-day called on Mr. E.L. Stracey, Inspector General of Police, Tamil Nadu, and discussed with him, measures to help the RPF in crime detection work. Mr. Stracey has agreed to train 150 RPF personnel in crime reporting, detection, investigation and prosecution. The IG of Police, Tamil Nadu, has also promised to provide accommodation for the RPF personnel and give them detailed instructions through well qualified instructors and experts in crime detection.
