The Indian Railways has upped vigil on employees, including contractual staff engaging in undesirable activities to prevent possible sabotage in train operations.

Responding to an alert issued by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on the possibility of sabotage involving insiders, the Railway Board in a written communication said the Railway Security Management System, which tracked individuals engaging in undesirable activities, was being actively updated by all Zonal Railways.

The railways is the largest national transporter, which employs over 12 lakh employees across its network. A sizeable number of contractual staff are also being involved in maintenance, catering, house-keeping and other activities.

Kavarapettai accident

After an in-depth investigation into the rear-collision of Train 12578 Musiri-Dharbanga Bagmati Express at Kavarapettai in Southern Railway on the night of October 11, 2024, the CRS in his final report concluded that the accident was caused by sabotage.
