There are no easy solutions for controlling the continued pressure on prices. There are, however, ideas that were tried and that proved inadequate in a market like the Greek one, which continues to be beset by distortions and a lack of transparency. One of these ideas basically boils down to a “gentleman’s agreement,” and it keeps cropping up even though it has proven ineffectual again and again. Inflation cannot be battled with courtesies and good intentions.
