Torrential rain that lashed Madurai city on Thursday evening has once again exposed the bad condition of the city roads. Waterlogging on arterial roads, thoroughfares and interior lanes caused much inconvenience to vehicle users and pedestrians alike. The rain lashed the city and its suburbs for close to an hour. Some of the places in the city that received heavy rainfall include Teppakulam, Anna Nagar, K.K. Nagar, Kamarajar Salai, Goripalayam, Tallakulam, Iyer Bungalow, Periyar Bus Stand and Mattuthavani. Places like Melur, Tirumangalam, Thirupparankundram and surrounding areas in Madurai district also recorded heavy rainfall.Due to the waterlogging, vehicle users found it difficult to pass through the main roads. They had to drive their vehicles slowly along the roads leading to traffic snarls at several places.Since rainwater filled potholes and stagnated on roads, the vehicle users unknowingly hit potholes at many places. They were also unable to spot submerged speed breakers. Officer-goers and school and college students who were returning home in the evening found it difficult to travel along the roads as vehicular movement had come to a grinding halt. Not only the vehicle users faced a difficult time moving through the water-logged roads, but many pedestrians, including school and college students, faced a tough time wading through the water-logged roads. With their umbrellas out and some wearing raincoats, people had to wade through ankle-deep water, and in some places even knee-deep water, to reach their destinations. Many people had to take shelter at roadside shops till the intensity of the rain reduced. In places like K.K. Nagar, the streets were filled with ankle-deep water making it difficult for the residents to get in and out of their houses. Water also entered the houses in low-lying areas. People had a difficult time draining the water. The residents complained that it had become a recurring issue. The complaints of the public were not being looked into by authorities. As a result, every time it rained in the city, there was waterlogging. There was a need for proper storm water drains, they said. Published - June 11, 2026 11:25 pm IST
