Tiruppur has been selected as a model district in Tamil Nadu for implementing Farmer Registration Identity initiative for purchase of fertilizers.The scheme entails digital compilation of farmers’ data and provide each with a unique identification number, similar to Aadhaar. In the future, all Central and State government agricultural schemes and subsidies will be linked to the ID number.To begin with, fertilizers will be sold to farmers in the district only if they obtain the Farmer Registration Identity, District Collector Manish Narnaware said.With effect from Thursday, farmers were required to produce the ID number to purchase fertilizers from retail outlets, wholesale dealers, and primary agricultural cooperative credit societies.Registration is being carried out through Common Service Centres (CSCs), and offices of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department on production of Aadhaar copy, land ownership documents, and mobile number linked with Aadhaar, the farmers have been told.The district administration has instructed farmers to contact officials of the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare at the block level for further assistance.
