This decision, announced in a FIDE statement, marks a victory for Ukraine and its allied chess federations, who have consistently pushed for stronger action against Russia since its full-scale invasion in 2022.FIDE stated that Russia's chess federation had continued to host events in Ukraine's Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions, as well as on the annexed Crimean peninsula. This directly violated a March order issued by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In its statement on Wednesday, FIDE declared: "The (FIDE) Council resolves to impose the sanction of temporary suspension of membership of the respective Member Federation (Russia) with immediate effect."
