Deputy Minister in the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, Sihle Zikalala's alarming revelations about an illegal unit in the Public Works department has prompted urgent investigations by the Auditor-General and Public Service Commission.
Deputy Minister of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, Sihle Zikalala, has said that he has alerted the Auditor-General (AG) and the Public Service Commission (PSC) of an illegal unit operating within the department.
Zikalala revealed the developments during his address in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) as part of their departmental Budget Vote. The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, along with several provincial MECs and other organisations, were in attendance.
The ministers touched on the reform of the Independent Development Trust (IDT), detailed the ongoing investigations into Property Management Trading Entity’s (PMTE’s) leasing failures, ghost employees, lifestyle audits, EPWP abuse, the PSA Oxygen Plant tender, and Telkom Towers.
One of the big announcements was the reform of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) with the launch of a Working on Infrastructure pilot program, after close to four and a half thousand participants and community members raised serious concerns about gatekeeping, manipulated lists, ghost beneficiaries, unfair access, abuse, and even sex-for-jobs.
