Ines Ramirez Perez was alone in a remote village in Mexico when, after more than 12 hours of labour, she began to believe she was running out of options.

With no doctor nearby and no practical way to reach a hospital, she feared that both she and her unborn baby could die.

The pain was growing worse, and the delivery was not progressing.

Faced with a situation few people could imagine, Perez made a decision that would later be studied by doctors around the world.

She picked up a kitchen knife and performed a Caesarean section on herself.
