China plans to expand tourist trains and rail services in its latest effort to boost consumer spending, as it seeks to tap the growing popularity of its high-speed rail network among international visitors. The extensive network links the country’s vast regions and already serves as the primary mode of transport for domestic travellers. As international tourist arrivals rise – supported by expanded visa-free entry policies and growing cultural influence – the rail network itself has also become a distinct attraction for some foreign travellers. The new measures, released in a 15-point notice by authorities including the tourism ministry and the national rail operator on Wednesday, outlined plans to launch more than 160 dedicated tourist trains nationwide by 2030.“[We will] encourage tourism trains to collaborate with well-known IPs to create themed trains and carriages through market-driven initiatives,” officials said. Along with character-themed carriages, the trains would also feature tailored itineraries such as wellness retreats and tours for senior citizens.Several train services have gone viral online over the past year, including the “Panda Express” tour, a multi-day journey on a themed luxury train connecting Chengdu in Sichuan province – home to the giant panda – with the vast western region of Xinjiang.China’s high-speed rail network is known for its convenience, including a service that allows passengers to order meals from stations along their route and have the food delivered directly to their seats.
