At the 2026 World Cup, Clutch, Maple and Zayu will carry on a proud tradition that has featured the legendary likes of World Cup Willie, Pique, Stryker, Footix, Goleo and La'eeb.If these names aren't familiar to you, study up!Clutch, Maple and Zayu are the official mascots of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and they join a decades-long lineage of iconic costumed characters that dates back to the 1966 World Cup in England. That was when World Cup Willie broke mascot ground and was the first of his kind at a World Cup (or, at least in an official capacity).For the 2026 World Cup, there are three mascots since there are three host nations (Canada, Mexico and the United States). Let's meet those mascots:Clutch the Bald EagleClutch represents the U.S. and is, of course, a bald eagle, which is the USA's national bird (officially as of December 2024).Per FIFA, Clutch is "a social spark and sports fanatic, Clutch, like all great midfielders, unites people wherever they go, proving that true flight is about purpose, passion and play."We Americans do love our sports!Maple the MooseMaple represents Canada, and according to FIFA, Maple is "a street style-loving artist, music enthusiast and dedicated goalkeeper, Maple found purpose through creativity, resilience and unapologetic individuality."That 's a lot for a mascot that was birthed in September 2025!Zayu the JaguarZayu is the mascot representing Mexico, and is characterized by FIFA as "more than an athlete … a symbol of cultural celebration and connection, carrying the heart of Mexico with pride."So, as you're watching 2026 World Cup matches this summer, keep an eye out for the sideline shenanigans of this colorful trio.The biggest stories, every morning.
