A pool of water has formed on Wandsbeck Road in Clare Estate after a month long burst water pipe. Residents are concerned about children playing in the stagnant water.
A month-long eThekwini Municipality water leak led to a pool of water forming near Clare Estate homes and an informal settlement.
Alicia Kissoon, eThekwini ward 23 DA councillor, said she received complaints from residents that the water flow damaged the road surface, causing further damage to vehicle tyres and shocks. Kissoon said thousands of litres of fresh water were lost over a month of “inaction,” raising concerns about the municipality's 53% water-loss statistic.
“The community had been reporting it and eventually reached out to me because they wanted to save water. Two houses could not access their driveways because of the water pool. The concern here is that the informal settlement nearby and some houses did not have water, but water was flowing out of the damaged pipe,” she said.
A resident who wished to remain anonymous said her concern was that children returning from and leaving for school were playing in the water with no adult supervision.
