Tension prevailed among police personnel and motorists for some time on June 9 night after a group of transgender persons staged a road blockade at Koramangala in Bengaluru, alleging police inaction against a rival group that had repeatedly assaulted them in a bid to drive them away from lucrative begging spots. The protest disrupted traffic movement in the area before police intervened, and persuaded the demonstrators to disperse.According to police sources, the dispute stems from an ongoing turf war between rival transgender groups over control of prominent begging locations, including the Silk Board flyover, St. John’s signal, Madiwala, and parts of Koramangala. In a complaint filed with police, Chukki, 25, and her friend Nithya, 27, alleged that they were begging, along with their associates, under the Silk Board flyover around 1 a.m. on June 9 when a rival group, led by Aishwarya Reddy, allegedly attacked them with slippers and sticks. The complainants claimed that they were assaulted and threatened with dire consequences if they continued to operate in the area. The group alleged that the accused demanded a monthly payment of ₹30,000 to allow them to beg in locations under their control, and warned them against entering ‘their territory’ without their permission. One of the victims reportedly sustained injuries and underwent treatment. The rival group has filed a counter-complaint, accusing Chukki and her associates of initiating the violence.Prakruthi, a member of the rival group, alleged that Chukki and her associates picked a quarrel with them and assaulted several members of her group using wooden sticks and other objects. The complainants claimed they suffered injuries on their hands, legs, face, back and abdomen during the attack. They further alleged that the accused snatched four mobile phones and took ₹20,000 in cash before fleeing from the spot. They have accused the group led by Chukki of issuing death threats.Police have registered cases based on both complaints, and are investigating the allegations. Senior police officers said statements from both groups are being verified, and further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation. Published - June 11, 2026 03:13 pm IST
