One of Helsinki’s best-known waterfront attractions will be demolished as part of a redevelopment of the city’s South Harbour area, with plans already underway for a replacement facility on the same site.
The decision affects Allas Sea Pool, the seawater spa and leisure venue next to Helsinki Market Square that has operated since 2016. Nordic Urban, the property development company behind the project, said the current structure will be removed to allow work on the harbour’s flood protection system and waterfront wall.
The demolition is not expected to begin this year. Nordic Urban project development director Petteri Lautso told Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat that the venue is also expected to remain in place through next year, with demolition becoming more likely after that point as redevelopment plans progress.
