Virgil van Dijk has done the math, and the numbers line up almost too perfectly. If the Netherlands reach the 2026 World Cup final, the match would be his 100th cap for his country.
A milestone with weight behind it
Van Dijk currently sits on 92 caps for the Netherlands, meaning every match the Dutch play at this summer’s tournament inches him closer to that century mark. The arithmetic works out so that a run to the final, through the group stage and knockout rounds, would land him on exactly 100.
He also holds a record 74 appearances as captain of the national team, making him the most-capped skipper in Dutch football history.
The World Cup final would reportedly coincide with van Dijk’s 35th birthday, meaning he could celebrate turning a year older while chasing the one trophy that has eluded the Netherlands across their entire footballing history.
