Thousands of pupils have been forced to exit the private school system with many parents unable to foot the higher fees since the addition of VAT.

Desperately trying to find alternative education for their children, some have found the private school exodus has led to oversubscription in the best UK state schools, and forced them to take drastic measures.

Single parent Michelle Daniells, 57, is one such example.

She said: “We couldn’t find a suitable state school place where I live. There is a real pressure point in capacity in the state sector.”

As a result, she made the decision to send her daughter, Amelie, abroad for schooling.
