South African motorists could soon see changes to how vehicle licence discs are used
South Africa is increasingly turning to technology in a bid to combat crime, identification, payments - and now number plate scanning technology - as the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) is looking towards a disc-less system based on electronic verification.
Simon Zwane, spokesperson for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), confirmed that the change forms part of a broader policy direction adopted by the organisation.
He stated that physical licence discs will continue to be used for now, until detailed implementation plans and official rollout announcements are made.
"This is a policy direction that the RTMC has adopted. Physical [licence discs] will continue until detailed announcements are made. Fraud and corruption investigations will continue," Zwane told IOL.
