Guwahati: The United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of the Nagas in Manipur, has announced a 24-hour total shutdown across Naga areas from 6 am on June 11 to 6 am on June 12 following the recovery of the mortal remains of six Naga civilians who were abducted on May 13.In a statement, the UNC said the release of 14 Kuki detainees on Tuesday had raised hopes among the Naga people, but those expectations were shattered after the six hostages, allegedly taken captive by Leilon Vaiphei villagers and militants of the Kuki National Front-President [KNF(P)], were recovered as lifeless human remains in "highly mutilated and dismembered conditions".Also read: Six abducted Naga men found dead in Manipur: PoliceCalling the incident a gross violation of human rights and an affront to human dignity, the UNC strongly condemned the killings. "We condemn this sacrilegious and satanic act upon the innocent Naga civilians in the strongest terms," it said, while expressing sympathy and solidarity with the bereaved families.The council said the mortal remains of the six hostages would not be received until its charter of demands is addressed.Among its demands are the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with all Kuki militant groups; the immediate arrest and prosecution of all KNF(P) personnel allegedly involved in the abduction of 18 Naga civilians, including two pastors, from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13 and the subsequent killing of six of them; and action in connection with the murder of Wilson Thanga Chiru at Joujangtek on the same day.The UNC also demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of Lalboi Vaiphei, chief of Leilon Vaiphei village, along with all others allegedly involved in the abduction of the 18 civilians.It further sought the immediate removal of Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, alleging that she is the wife of Semtinthang alias Thangboi Kipgen, president of KNF(P), whom it described as being complicit in the killings.Meanwhile, the Government of Manipur strongly condemned the murder of the six Naga villagers, whose mortal remains were recovered on Wednesday in Kangpokpi district.Also read: Nagaland seeks restart of petroleum exploration as Rio discusses plans with Hardeep PuriChief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and said the government would not tolerate such violence. He said those responsible for the murders would be arrested and punished in accordance with the law.The chief minister noted that the state government has already handed over the investigation into the abduction and killing of the six villagers to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).Singh also condemned the killing of a farmer from Lansan Kuki village under Tamei Police Station in Tamenglong district by suspected armed miscreants on Tuesday and extended his condolences to the deceased's family.
