A Consumer NZ survey shows 82 percent of people say their food budgets are under strain.

Consumer NZ says households are under pressure from food prices, and supermarket loyalty programmes can make the problem worse.

Consumer has completed a new survey that shows 82 percent of people said their food budgets were under strain and 67 percent had low confidence government policies could help keep food affordable and accessible.

"Food is a basic necessity, but for many households it's getting harder to afford the food they want and need," Consumer NZ head of research and advocacy Gemma Rasmussen said.

The survey found more than a third of New Zealanders regularly or very often stretched their food budget. One in three said they did not have enough of the food they want and nearly half said while they had enough food it was not the food they would prefer.
