The bloc is eyeing building a larger network of AI gigafactories – but potentially with fewer chips apiece

The EU could build as many as seven or eight large AI model training hubs – aka AI gigafactories – Poland’s digital secretary of state Dariusz Standerski told Euractiv in an interview on the sidelines of a Council of the EU meeting in Luxembourg.

According to Standerski, the first round of investments will see construction of some facilities begin in 2028, followed by a second round in 2030.

When the European Commission proposed the flagship AI infrastructure plan in January 2025 it suggested the public-private partnership project would fund up to five gigafactories, later saying each would be equipped with 100,000+ AI chips.

But on Tuesday Standerski said the current expectation is the EU will end up with “seven to eight” facilities.
