Who Let The Dogs Out by Zehra Marikar

Three women hold the thread of life between them. A flock of crows, matchboxes, chillies, lemons, and drishti bommais recur across canvases. In artist Zehra Marikar’s first showcase in Chennai since returning from London, mythology, superstition, and womanhood intertwine in a body of work that examines what it means to move through the world as a woman. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Zehra portrays women in vivid, dreamlike compositions full of talismanic objects. Her works will be on display at the third edition of The Madras Art Salon, organised by Madras Art Weekend in collaboration with the British Deputy High Commission, Chennai, and The Botanical Club . The previous editions featured Narayan Lakshman and Shrikar Madiraju in April and May respectively. “We wanted this to be a monthly event that promotes and supports both emerging and established artists. The focus is more or less on Madras-based artists. We are very keen to spotlight the contemporary artists of our city and give them visibility,” says Upasana Asrani, founder, Madras Art Weekend.
