Real Madrid’s ambitious attempt to sign Julian Alvarez has been firmly rejected by city rivals Atletico Madrid, despite a reported €150 million offer for the Argentine forward.

The bid was the first major move by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez after securing re-election on Sunday. During his campaign, Perez had pledged to make a blockbuster €150 million signing if he returned to office, and Alvarez emerged as his chosen target.

However, Atletico swiftly turned down the proposal, pointing to the striker’s €500 million release clause and making it clear they have no intention of selling one of their prized assets.

“After reviewing and evaluating the offer, Club Atletico de Madrid has expressed its gratitude for the proposal and has rejected it,” Real Madrid said in a statement.
