Police in the Western Cape have dealt a multi-million rand blow to the illicit trade industry following a major search and seizure operation in Bellville.

A joint task force consisting of members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and private brand protectors raided several shops in the Bellville central business district (CBD) on Tuesday, confiscating a massive haul of counterfeit clothing, running shoes, and sneakers valued at an estimated R98 million.

This operation forms part of an intensified provincial strategy to combat the counterfeit goods economy. Recent operations have increasingly targeted major commercial hubs to protect local consumers and legitimate businesses from the economic impact of counterfeit trading networks.

The provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said a wide range of counterfeit clothing and illicit goods were confiscated during the operation.
