Motorhead have announced that Lemmy's ashes will be displayed at Download Festival, which starts today and ends on Sunday, as band take on seventh 'Lemmy Forever' ceremony09:41, 10 Jun 2026Updated 09:46, 10 Jun 2026The ashes of Motorhead legend Lemmy are going on display at Download Festival, which kicks off today. The rock band have announced that they will conduct their seventh 'Lemmy Forever' ceremony at the festival, to honour their friend and bandmate. Lemmy, whose real name was Ian Fraser Kilmister, died in 2015, aged 70, shortly after he was diagnosed with cancer. For years, there has been a tribute to the iconic musician at Download Festival and festival organisers have confirmed it will happen again this year. The ashes will be displayed in the onsite area Lemmy's Lounge, as a miniature of his custom urn, holding a portion of his ashes, will be enshrined in a fruit machine. The tribute ceremony will take place on Friday 12 June at 3pm.But this is not the last chance for UK fans to visit the ashes. At the end of the festival, the same ashes in the fruit machine will be transported to the O2 Apollo in Manchester, where they will remain permanently following another 'Lemmy Forever' ceremony. The ceremonies have been organised across the years by Phil Campbell, who played guitar. Sadly Phil died in March this year, aged 64, after suffering from complications after surgery. Since his death, the organisation of 'Lemmy Forever' has been taken over by Motorhead's manager Todd Singerman.Todd said: "It remains a responsibility we proudly carry. Not everyone can make the pilgrimage to visit Lemmy in Hollywood so we are bringing Lem back to his fans. These places meant something to him and they mean something to the people who loved him."He added that the 2026 ceremonies will also be a chance for fans to pay tribute to Phil too. He said Phil was "an important family member" and that were Lemmy still alive, he would "insist we all raise a glass to Phil".Lemmy's ashes are well travelled, and have been displayed in many locations over the years. In 2024, they were displayed in an urn shaped like his trademark hat in London's Stringfellow's strip club. They had also previously been escorted by a convoy of Harley Davidson bikers to Nottingham Rock City, and they go to Bloodstock Festival every year. Some went to the Los Angeles Rainbow Bar & Grill and a portion was scattered at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany.Article continues belowSome of the ashes were incorporated into an Ace of Spades tattoo on the middle finger of Metallica's James Hetfield. A few of his loved ones have turned some of the ashes into bullets. Many tributes have been made to Lemmy since his death 11 years ago. Metallica released a song called Murder One, which was named after Lemmy's favourite amp, and depicted his rise to fame. He was also inducted into the Hall of Heavy Metal History and had an extinct crocodile, the Lemmysuchus, named after him. In November 2016, an asteroid called 243002 was officially names 243002 Lemmy.Like this story?
