Officials at a town hall in eastern France have prevented a man from having his pet’s name engraved on his gravestone, citing cemetery regulations.

The 68-year-old, who has already reserved a plot in a cemetery in Dole, Jura, had wanted the name of a much-loved greyhound, which had died 25 years ago, included on his gravestone when he the time comes – but mairie officials have rejected the inscription, insisting that to do so would imply the animal was buried with him

“That dog was my only friend. Since I’m old and have no family left, I wanted to purchase this grave,” the man told Le Parisien.

“The company had already made it, thinking the municipality would give the green light. In the end, they gave me a negative decision.”

He said owning the animal had helped him through a difficult time in his life following a relationship breakdown.
