The European Commission has ordered Facebook parent Meta Platforms to restore the ability of third-party AI tools to use WhatsApp’s business API, in a move it said was designed to prevent irreparable harm to competition while it continues a competition probe over the issue.

In March, Meta said it would allow AI assistants to pay to access to the WhatsApp for Business API in some jurisdictions, in an effort to stave off an interim measure, but the Commission decided this was insufficient.

The Commission began its investigation in December after Meta effectively banned competing AI tools from offering services over the API, instead offering only its own Meta AI.
