Greece’s power distribution operator has cooperated with a leading wildlife charity to provide a new, safe home for a stork family whose nest on top of an electricity post was frazzling the network, disrupting vital irrigation work.

The Anima wildlife organization said in a social media post that HEDNO got in touch to seek help after the nest, near the village of Pyrgos in the Orchomenos farming region of central Greece, caused a short-circuit.

“It had to be quickly fixed, because this is a time of year when farmers water their crops intensely,” Anima said. “Everything went well. We removed the fledgelings and an egg that hadn’t hatched yet, and the HEDNO crew installed a new, safe nest.”

Anima said that the adult stork pair seemed initially horrified by the goings-on, and after flying round the spot for some time settled on a nearby pole to observe proceedings.

“Every one was delighted when, once the work was completed, the parents returned to their babies,” Anima said.
