Also, in Wednesday’s edition: Euractiv latest, Cristiano Ronaldo’s SIU, enlargement

THANKS, BOSS: Our editor-in-chief, Matthew Karnitschnig, announced on Tuesday that he is stepping down. Matt is the reason I, and so many in our newsroom, came on board after he joined in 2024. Frankly, he brought Euractiv back from the dead. But this was no conjuring trick: he nurtured younger reporters, pointed out hard truths, launched this newsletter, and injected much-needed critical thinking into the Brussels bubble.

“In a town where most media are fueled by ‘access’, we haven’t played favourites, much to the chagrin of the people and institutions we write about,” he wrote in his final send-off. Just yesterday, a senior MEP told me we are now the first thing he reads in the morning. Matt leaves us in great shape to take Euractiv forward. Thank you.
