Matthew Karnitschnig is stepping down as editor-in-chief of Euractiv, he told staff on Tuesday.
“It has been a great privilege to work with the Euractiv team and help rebuild the newsroom,” Karnitschnig said. “I’m proud of what we have achieved together, especially the record traffic and Pro-subscriber growth. With the organisation entering a new phase, this feels like the right moment for me to pursue the next challenge.”
Euractiv hired Karnitschnig in 2024 from Politico Europe, where he was chief Europe correspondent for a decade. He previously spent 15 years as a reporter and editor at The Wall Street Journal in the US and Europe, where he was a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist.
“We are grateful to Matt for his many contributions, his integrity and the strong journalism he has led,” Euractiv’s CEO René Moerland said in a statement. “He has built a talented newsroom and leaves Euractiv’s news operation in a strong position.”
Following Karnitschnig’s departure, Joshua Posaner will continue to lead the newsroom as managing editor.
