GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines — Fear now drives thousands of General Santos City residents to spend their nights outdoors after Monday’s powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake left homes damaged, buildings collapsed, and aftershocks rattling communities across southern Mindanao.
While authorities continue search-and-rescue operations for four missing individuals trapped in two collapsed establishments, many survivors have chosen to stay in open spaces, evacuation sites, and temporary shelters rather than return to structures they no longer trust and, for some, no longer have.
