The FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off on June 11, and one of its most compelling storylines has nothing to do with the usual powerhouses. Uzbekistan, known as the White Wolves, will take the pitch for the first time in the tournament’s history, coached by a man who lifted the trophy himself: Fabio Cannavaro.
But for the crypto world, the more interesting subplot is happening off the field. Kraken was designated as the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the tournament, continuing a pattern where digital asset firms use global sports as a megaphone for mainstream adoption.
A World Cup winner coaching World Cup newcomers
Cannavaro was appointed as Uzbekistan’s head coach in October 2025. The Italian legend captained his country to World Cup glory in 2006, winning the Ballon d’Or the same year. Now he’s tasked with guiding a team of relative unknowns through one of the tournament’s toughest groups.
Uzbekistan landed in Group K alongside Portugal, Colombia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. All three opponents sit inside the world’s top 20 rankings.
