Dario Amodei sat across from JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon on Bloomberg’s “The Circuit” on May 5 and did something unusual for a tech CEO: he spent most of his airtime talking about how dangerous his own product could become. The Anthropic chief reiterated his estimate that there’s a 25% chance advanced AI leads to catastrophic outcomes, a number he’s been putting on the record for months now.
The growth problem nobody planned for
Amodei revealed during the Bloomberg appearance that Anthropic experienced an 80-fold increase in revenue and usage during the first quarter of 2026. The company had projected a tenfold jump. They missed their own forecast by a factor of eight, in the wrong direction if you’re worried about moving too fast.
Amodei described the growth as “crazy and too hard to handle.” Most CEOs would frame 80x growth as a triumph. Amodei framed it as a logistical nightmare arriving at precisely the wrong moment.
