The pedestrian killed after being hit by a car in Dargaville had been turning his life around with more to offer the world, his sisters say.
Pita (Peter) Mako, 58, was fatally struck at the intersection of Murdoch St and Colville Rd on State Highway 12 about 1.15am on
Passersby stopped to help while emergency services responded but he died at the scene.
The small Kaipara township had been Mako’s home for 20 years. There, his watercress-selling venture had earned him the nicknames Pūhā Pete and The Watercress Man.
