A middle-aged woman reportedly died by suicide at Kukkalapalli village in the Pakala mandal of Tirupati district early on Tuesday. The police suspect that it is a case of dowry harassment.The deceased was identified as Muni Latha (30), who was married to Goduguchinta Uday Kumar in 2024. She had allegedly been facing harassment for dowry during the last two years of their marriage, despite her parents giving 11 sovereigns of gold as dowry, the police said.According to Pakala Circle Inspector T. Chinna Govindu, Muni Latha was subjected to physical and mental torture for additional dowry by her husband, his maternal aunt Bujjamma, his elder sister Usha, and his paternal uncle Chandrababu.Latha’s father, Sankaraiah, recalled that his daughter had attempted suicide within the first few months of her marriage but was fortunately saved. The harassment continued even after the birth of a son in October of last year.The woman reportedly complained to her parents just a few days before her death that she had been physically assaulted by her husband at their residence in Tirupati. The Pakala police have registered a criminal case against Uday Kumar and his family members under sections pertaining to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
