The officer was responding to an earlier two-car crash at approximately 11:10 PM when their marked police car was involved in a collision with a black Mercedes. The incident occurred on the southbound carriageway, resulting in the officer being taken to hospital with serious injuries, where they remained in a critical condition on Tuesday. The 73-year-old driver of the Mercedes has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Northumbria Police Assistant Chief Constable Helena Barron expressed support for the officer and their family, and the force has appealed for witnesses or dashcam footage related to the collision.
