Every once in a while, the stars align and what may have been improbable is suddenly in the realm of the possible. For old Bengalureans and music lovers, the erstwhile bFlat returns with its brand of music to The Humming Tree this weekend.Titled, One Night at bFlat: A Tribute To Santana, this revival stems from the long-standing rapport between Arati Raoand Sunil Shetty of bFlat, and Nikhil Barua, founder of The Humming Tree. Though both venues downed their shutters within days of each other in October 2019, Humming Tree reopened earlier this year.In its heyday, bFlat was known for giving local musicians a platform whether it was the blues or indie melodies and the Humming Tree too, had its own demographic with occasional crossovers that celebrated music. “We used to curate events where we would create an ensemble of local musicians who would cover the work of a specific artiste noted for shaping our musical sensibilities,” says Arati, adding the organisers felt this collaboration should follow the same format as “it represented bFlat and the good, old times.”According to Arati, this joint effort symbolised friendship and community. “It is about bringing people together — those with a common love for music, a vision to support musicians, and a passion to bring class entertainment to the city’s audiences.”Nikhil says the idea of a collaboration was a recurring conversation with Arati over the past six years. “In the independent art community, support from everyone is vital, yet that is often lacking across artistes, audiences and venues. Some of the biggest names and international bands come to India, but at a grassroots level, we are still struggling. In most cities, many young bands don’t have places to perform, this can be overcome with genuine support.”
