"The Old City is the heart of Tyre, and any attack on it would be a national catastrophe," the statement said, adding that the Old City was home to innocent civilians and "centuries-old cultural and religious heritage." "We call for immediate political and security efforts to preserve the ability to remain steadfast, and we call on the international community and UN agencies to fulfill their moral responsibility to protect the population in accordance with international humanitarian law," the church leaders said.Georges Iskandar, the Melkite Archbishop of Tyre, said he would remain among his people despite an Israeli military evacuation order issued earlier Tuesday, which included the city's Christian quarter. Israeli security forces have routinely accompanied settlers and acted as a shield for the violence, the report said.The Israeli Prime Minister's Office and military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
