For many elderly South Africans, particularly those who are bedridden, frail or living in old-age homes, simply standing in long queues at Home Affairs offices is out of the question.
As South Africa transitions away from the green barcoded ID book, the question arises: what will happen to elderly and bedridden citizens who cannot physically travel to Department of Home Affairs offices to apply for Smart IDs?
The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that the green ID book is being phased out as part of a broader plan toward biometric Smart IDs and eventually a fully digital identity system.
Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber recently said the government was “rapidly moving” to eradicate the green ID book. According to the government, the move comes as the green ID book remains vulnerable to fraud, identity theft and organised crime.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has also indicated that a future date will be set after which the green ID book will no longer be recognised.
