Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber has launched a new online platform aimed at streamlining the application process for Smart ID Cards for South Africans.
The initiative is a crucial step in the government's strategy to eliminate the green barcoded ID book. The service was introduced on Monday during a media event at Canal Walk in Cape Town, in partnership with FNB.
According to the department, the platform allows users to quickly find their nearest participating bank branch offering Smart ID services, with real-time updates as more banking partners join the programme.
The launch forms part of the department's expanding Digital Partnership with the banking sector, which now provides Smart ID services through 372 participating bank branches nationwide.
