TL;DRiOS 27’s developer beta contains code references to “foldState,” hinge angle detection, a secondary display, and dual cover glass. Apple’s foldable iPhone is expected in September at around $2,000.
Apple did not announce a foldable iPhone at WWDC 2026. But the first developer beta of iOS 27 is full of evidence that one is coming, and soon.
Software researcher M1Astra discovered code strings inside the beta that reference folding hardware directly. One mechanism is labelled “foldState.” Others include “mechanicalAngleDegrees” and “angleDegrees,” suggesting the operating system can determine how widely a device is opened around its hinge.
What the code reveals
The operating system also contains references to a secondary display, a second cover glass, and two additional light sensors within an updated Apple service utility for display repair. These entries are consistent with a book-style foldable that has both an inner and outer screen.
