The Fifa World Cup 2026 is set to take centre-stage from this week, with 48 nations set to light up North America. While there are usual favourites, there are underdogs that could win the hearts and minds of supporters but most importantly the coveted championship.

Below Independent Media football writer Mihlali Baleka profiles five nations that could cause a major surprise, and go all the way to claim football’s ultimate prize.

The Red Devils are approaching the end of their ‘golden generation,’ with a couple of key players, including playmaker Kevin de Bruyne, expected to be playing in their final World Cup. Given all the promise, they will be keen to bow out in style by winning the title.

Having finished second and third in 2018 and 2022, respectively, they will finally want to go all the way in North America.
